Nissan LEAF in the Snow?

We've come across more than one or two drivers in the Bradenton area who believe the Nissan LEAF is engineered to serve only as a fair-weather transporter - we do live in Florida afterall. However, you'll be interested to know that a recent test conducted by over 60 automotive journalists in Japan have proved this common misconception wrong.

Of course, given the fact the Nissan LEAF is engineered with a smart weight distribution, Vehicle Dynamic Control, regenerative braking, four-wheel ABS, Brake Assist, independent front-suspension with stabilizer bar, torsion bar rear axle with integrated stabilizing bar, vehicle-speed-sensitive electric power steering, and state-of-the-art battery, we had no doubt it would tear up the white and ice like the Abominable Snowman his dinner.

Even more impressive? At under 16-degrees Fahrenheit, the LEAF EV's heart kept warm with temperatures of 41-50-degrees Fahrenheit.

Speaking on the Nissan LEAF, winner of both "IIHS Top Safety Pick" and "Ward's Ten Best Engines" titles among many others, Hiroyoshi Kato, Technical Meister, Nissan explains, "The footwork of the [Nissan] LEAF is smooth and nimble because of the heavy components, such as batteries, are mounted under the floor, and the center of gravity is low and in the middle. Such vehicle motion is emphasized in the snow."1

On the LEAF's aptitude in the winter-weather test, Kato continues, "...A car can easily slip or drift on snow or ice. As for the [Nissan] LEAF...the start of slipping, etc. - is very smooth and easy to control compared to the conventional FR [front engine/rear drive] or FF [front engine, front drive] vehicles..."1

As you can see, the Nissan LEAF might be eco-friendly, but in less-than-optimal driving conditions, it has the ability to break out a determined, steadfast driving force needed to keep you and yours secure.
